Chalk It Up!
National Health Care Day of Action
Scheduled for August 22, 2006

Chalk It UpSEATTLE (July 20, 2006) - Nearly 46 million Americans are uninsured.  At least 18,000 people die each year because they don’t have health insurance.  We may not see a chalk outline at a crime scene for those Americans who die because they lack insurance, but it’s just as criminal.

Chalk it up to inaction or misplaced priorities, but now is the time for our leaders to draw a new conclusion about our nation’s health care crisis.

Join thousands of Health Care Voters at coordinated rallies across the country on August 22! Check back often for new updates and a list of events and locations near you.

WE DID IT - WE "PUSHED THE TEMPO UP" ON HEALTH CARE!

Money and Stethescope

Washington for Health Care and our coalition partners wrapped up a fairly successful legislative session, thanks in no small part to the activism of health care voters like you!

In the state budget, 6,500 more working adults and over  7,000 more children will be getting affordable health coverage.  The waiting list for eligible children is cut to 1/3 of its original size.  And a newly created partnership program will help employees in some small businesses afford good health coverage.  There are more details to come, so check back soon!

IT'S TIME FOR FAIR SHARE HEALTH CARE

Are You Fed Up?

Remember in the movie "Network" when the guy throws open his window and yells, "I'm mad as @#$$ and I'm not going to take it anymore!"? That's how lots of Washingtonians feel when they learn that large, profitable corporations have been asking us - the taxpayers - to spend $25 million a year to provide health care for their employees.

More on Fair Share Health Care

The Speaker of the House, Frank Chopp, refused to bring the Fair Share Health Care bill to a vote on the floor this year, despite the fact that most of his caucus supported the bill and it would have passed if given a chance.  Read the Seattle Times article (left sidebar) for details.

The Fair Share Health Care Coalition will be back to address the issue again next year.  And Governor Christine Gregoire has pledged her support.  Click here to send her a quick email thank you note and to share your concern about large employers dumping their health care costs onto publicly-funded programs. 83% of Washingtonians agree that large employers should pay their fair share.

What Is the Fair Share Health Care Bill?
Fair Share Health Care is legislation that would require large employers to pay a reasonable percentage for their employees' health care, or else pay into a state fund for health care for the uninsured. Right now, many of these employees are currently using Medicaid and Basic Health Plan - and taxpayers are footing the bill.
